Near The Borderline

Coming of age (and then some) on the northern frontier

David Inglehart

Sport biography meets psychological mystery in this revealing memoir about the early days of hang-gliding and a brother’s uncharted illness. An aspiring aviator introduces ski-flying at a mountain resort in Maine and goes on to compete in the first world hang-gliding championships in the Austrian Alps. After an extended gliding tour of the western states, he returns east to spend a dark winter of the soul in an isolated cabin in the Thousand Islands, where a troubled family history eventually catches up with him.

This nostalgic journey impressed me with the interweaving of vivid memories and adventurous endeavors. The river and the Thousand Islands are described not only as places, but as elements of personal growth and introspective analysis.
